In this class, students will learn to use various mediums, the principles of design & composition, and the psychology of color to support personal narrative. In each project, students will be challenged to think conceptually, creating works that express their own perspectives, thoughts, and voice. Projects will give students a general idea to start from that they may interpret as they choose and express in the medium(s) that best support their idea. For example, students may be asked to create a piece that represents their memory of a favorite place—rather than being a simple realistic rendering of perspective, students would have the opportunity to explore how to infuse emotion, perception, and other concepts into the piece so that the viewer is enabled to see the place through the student’s eyes. Students will also be taught how to verbally explain their work and how to write an artist statement. Students will finish the class with a portfolio of original work that conveys their unique artistic vision.
